About Price of Play
A straight answer to "how much would this actually cost me?" before you buy a single thing.
Why this site exists
Thinking about picking up a new hobby usually starts with the same unanswered question: what is this actually going to cost? Most advice online is either a single blog post about one hobby, or a forum thread full of wildly different answers. Price of Play pulls that together in one place — a realistic range for what it costs to just try a hobby, and what it costs to go all in, with the actual gear list behind each number.
How the numbers are built
Every estimate is based on current retail pricing and typical beginner setups reported by hobbyists and specialty retailers in each category. We show two tiers on purpose: a realistic "just trying it" budget that doesn't cut corners on the basics, and a "going all in" budget that reflects what committed hobbyists actually spend in their first year. Neither number is a quote — prices shift by region, brand, and how much you buy used — but both are grounded in real current pricing rather than a guess.
